In addition to getting to enjoy our homes, for many of us where we live is among our most
valuable asset. Although we can’t control market conditions (like the low inventory of homes
for sale and the continuing low interest rates which contributed greatly to the price increases in 2016*) there are things we can do to maintain and increase our home values.

In State College, we have “large lot” neighborhoods a bit further from town and campus. In more “in town neighborhoods” such as Saybrook, the closer proximity between homes amplifies either the positive impact or the negative consequences resulting from their presentations. As members of our respective neighborhoods, it is both to our benefit and our responsibility to consider how to put our best foot forward.

Following is a list of things (some obvious) to consider:

  • Landscaping: Mow lawns, reseed where grass looks thin, trim hedges, trees, and anything that obscures the view to your homes. Add colorful flowers along pathways and by the front entry.
  • Require removal of any dead or dying landscaping, unsightly trash or debris and don’t forget weed control (See clauses 15 and 16 of the Saybrook Declaration of Restrictive Covenants.)
  • Power wash the exterior of your homes, accumulated soot and moss will be gone and the home will look new again.
  • Be sure the paint on your front and garage doors as well as shutters and any trim look fresh and vibrant.
  • Repair any broken concrete or asphalt and seal driveways.
  • Give your front porch a makeover: Remove any stacked chairs or “out of place” items and consider a decorative bench or chair. Don’t forget the mailbox, give it a touch of paint, and see that it’s standing straight.
  • Freshen or update any exterior light fixtures or hardware that has become broken or “tired.”
  • Use your garage to park cars and conceal trash and recycle bins.
  • Always clean up after your pet and consider your neighbors when it comes to noise from your home.
  • Pay attention to your entry sign and its surrounding landscaping and hardscaping. It is the gateway to your neighborhood, it creates that first impression and sets the tone for what follows.
  • Consider a neighborhood picnic (for example, 4th of July barbeque) in the terrific park you have. It can become a tradition that makes strangers into neighbors and can be fun for all.
